Being the Magic
It seems we have had a lot on our mind. It’s been silent and cold. The sun is birthing from the womb of darkness. We are suspended in stillness, yet no longer slumbering. While the last thrusts of winter’s icy fists may still be clutching at your aching bones, therein lies the promise of warmth, opportunity, renewal. It is close, so close. So close-we can taste it. We feel the warm breaths of spring - both literally and figuratively, huffing on our presence, like that of a child or a lover who still lies sleeping beside you when you have awakened early and, choosing not to move and wake them, instead steal a precious moment of silence before the chaos of the impending day begins. Perhaps you, like me, are feeling restless. Ready to go bounding into promise like a newborn foal on unsteady legs. The time is near, my dear ones, but not quite.
Sit, my friends. Grab a warm drink and find a quiet place to soak in the stillness. This is our ritual. A sacred time that is just ours to breathe in the remembering and the stillness. We know that silent time is to be treasured. A time to be the magic. It is in these moments where the magic is stirred within us. Here, in this sacred space, we need not be cloaked from the other realms as is necessary in the bustling, penetrating world around us. We are one with the all, one with self, one with Spirit, one with each other. This is where the magic happens.
I talk often about being the magic. To me, this means existing in such a way that you exist harmoniously with the world beyond the physical world. The Outer and the Inner become one. They are not separate but exist in perfect balance. This is the old way, forgotten perhaps, to us, but remembered by the ancestors whose blood and magic we carry in our own cells.
Being is a verb. An action word. Living in a spiritual way is not a passive sport. Being the magic is not about taking short cuts or casting spells to conjure an easier life, an enemy’s strife or a lover’s gaze. While magic can certainly be found in ritual with others, it’s breathing in these solitary glimpses of grace and connection, that allows the magic to course though our very essence. It’s choosing how we live our life, inwardly and outwardly. It’s aligning each step, each thought and each action to the harmony of the universe. Here we need not ask for what we need or seek- for it has already been provided. Here we connect to each other through this magical cosmic thread that unites us all and we are one.
Taking the time to be still is action. Taking the time to connect with Spirit - to offer one’s own sacred wisdoms in exchange for that which is received in the unknown, is action. To show up in a good way when other’s around you are not returning the favor; to trudge through the winter slush even when the spring is not yet on the horizon, to keep the vessel pure of mind, body, spirit, heart and intention- that certainly requires action. Being the magic is actively engaging in the sensory and extrasensory connections around you. It’s understanding that for all you give, you receive more in return without the asking. It’s in the realization that when you stop seeking what you think you want, when you allow yourself to exist fully and completely in the matrix, you find yourself in the most incredible experiences. Anyone looking can find magic in the stars or at the sacred wells. In being the magic we must honor it in the mundane. After all, that is where we live most of the time. If you are not in the habit of living this way, I double dog dare you to challenge yourself. The Goddess once told me that when at a crossroads, take the hardest route. The easy way- the one that leads in to patterned circumstance is circular. You know what to expect there. It is familiar, at least, even if it is unsatisfying. It always leads you back to the junction. Take the route of the unknown. Allow yourself to receive the mysteries and magic that are lying there - they have been there all along. It is you that is just now showing up to greet it.
How can you find sacred in the mundane? How can you be the magic? Take a different route to work even if it adds a few minutes to the commute. Look at things from a different perspective. Pay attention to the life bearing sun, not only when it’s rising or setting turns the sky to fire. Do something that terrifies you. Change the rules. Show gratitude for your blessings. Acknowledge the hardship of others, of the land of the forgotten ones. Resist the urge to fix, remedy or otherwise take on the suffering for others who are not doing their own work. Be both a teacher and a student. Walk softly. Keep your promises. And for the sake of the Goddess, laugh a little. Magic is everywhere. And in being the magic you allow yourself to experience completely the magic of being.
